The Senate's proposed $118 billion bipartisan border security bill, which would also provide aid for Ukraine and Israel, is a "dumpster fire" that will make the situation at the border worse rather than solve it, Rep. Scott Perry said on Newsmax on Tuesday. "What we're all supposed to be working toward, Democrats and Republicans, liberals, conservatives and everything in between, is solving the problem at the border, not making it worse," the Pennsylvania Republican said on Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "Enshrining in law the fact that we're not only allowing, but inviting almost 2 million people a year to come across the border illegally before we do anything, that's not solving the problem." He added that former President Donald Trump is correct in insisting that the bill not be passed, as the measure won't be a solution. "[President] Joe Biden and his party have been forcing this down the throats of the American people for about three years," said Perry. "Now, since the polls are looking badly for him, he's looking for a hasty exit. Well, we would give him a hasty exit if he would actually want to fix the problem ... this isn't a solution. This exacerbates the problem." Meanwhile, Perry said the House passed "a very good bill last spring" with H.R.2, which "enshrines in law many of the provisions used under the Trump administration" but that legislation remains stalled in the Senate. "If the president doesn't want to sign that, all he would have to do is go back to the majority of the former president's policies," said Perry, particularly the "Remain in Mexico" policy that requires immigrants to stay in Mexico while their asylum claims are being determined. "According to the Border Patrol, about 70% of the problem, just that one provision, [will] do that," he said. Perry also discussed the vote in the House on Tuesday seeking the impeachment of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and said he believes the "numbers at the end of the day will be there" to forward the matter to the Senate. "He should be impeached," said Perry. "He certainly earned it. I know that there is at least one member on the Republican side who will not vote that way, but I also know that the House's majority right now is based on who shows up. There's going to be an absence or two on each side." |
