Statement in Opposition to Budget Agreement

This is why people are sick of Washington and why I joined the House Freedom Caucus. Here we have a two-year budget deal that was negotiated behind closed doors between a handful of leaders without any input from other Members of Congress. I had about 36 hours to review a 144 page bill; and if I don't have any input on this agreement, then neither do the people of the 4th District. I've been criticized for being part of this "radical" Caucus; sorry, radical is when 3-4 people are allowed to dictate what's best for the American people behind closed doors while making a mockery of government accountability. That's not what I was sent here to do - so put me down as a "no" vote.

We're $18 trillion in debt and rapidly digging ourselves deeper in the hole. This agreement seeks long-term savings from mandatory spending programs, but does nothing to put Medicare or Social Security on a path to solvency, it raises short-term spending levels and contains policy changes and budget gimmicks that haven't been adequately scrutinized - that's how you get unintended consequences like we see every day with the Affordable Care Act. We need to do much better.

I'm trying to do better by fighting for reforms to make the legislative process fair for all Members. I'm actively working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle on several legislative initiatives, and our ideas should be considered in an open and transparent manner that allows the legislative process to work the way our Founders intended.

Until we challenge the status quo, we'll keep getting these complicated, big government, last minute deals that highlight why Americans don't trust Washington."
