Statement on House Passage of H.R. 3134, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act

The debate over funding Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with being “pro-life” or “pro-choice”; constituents on both sides of this issue tell me they’re sickened by the videos where Planned Parenthood officials nonchalantly discuss the killing of babies and harvesting their organs for scientific research. This moratorium will give Congress the time to investigate whether Planned Parenthood engaged in illegal activity and the extent of its shocking practices. American taxpayers are the largest funders of Planned Parenthood, sending the organization more than $500 million last fiscal year alone - potentially freeing up other funds to pay for the type of gruesome harvesting we’ve seen in the videos.

No American should ever be forced potentially to support this activity with their tax dollars - period. I voted in favor of H.R. 3134.

And this debate has nothing to do with women’s health care. I’m a husband, a father, a son and a friend who cares very deeply about women’s health care. I support efforts to shift this $500 million in taxpayer funds to other health providers so women may receive the care they need without forcing taxpayers to fund the sale of baby body parts. There are better options for women’s health care – let’s fund those instead.

The activities described in the Planned Parenthood videos are repugnant – and I will oppose any legislation that could force taxpayers to support it.
