Individual operators within the CIA as well the broader agency made tough decisions in the aftermath of 9/11 to combat al Qaeda, an adversary unlike any we’ve previously confronted. We must keep in mind that these decisions were made with the ultimate goal of keeping America safe.
However, after the CIA admitted last summer to spying on computers used by the Senate Intelligence Committee as they compiled the Senate report on enhanced interrogation techniques, the Agency’s credibility deserves to be called into question. I have serious concerns with the manner in which the CIA obstructed the oversight of the Congress and a variety of agencies within the Executive Branch.
Yet, as always in Washington, I’m also dismayed about the political motivations behind the report that was released today. This document was prepared solely by the Democratic Members of the Senate Intelligence Committee; keep in mind that most of their Republican counterparts have criticized its conclusions.
