Statement on House Passage of FY2015 Budget

“The American people have a right to the truth. The federal government has run up an unsustainable debt of $17.5 trillion and rising.  We’ve got to stop spending money we don’t have. America's safety net and retirement security programs will go bankrupt in the coming decades if we don’t take action - and our children will be left holding the bill.

Today the U.S. House passed a responsible, balanced budget. This budget balances in just ten years, doesn’t raise taxes and puts us on a path to pay off our debt.  This budget shows respect for hardworking taxpayers and protects our children.

Earlier this year, the Congressional Budget Office increased its deficit projection over 10 years by $1.2 trillion due to weaker economic growth. The House budget confronts that by expanding opportunity through pro-growth economic policies such as tax and regulatory reform; provides our troops the training, equipment and compensation they need; offers a patient-centered approach to health care reform; and strengthens the safety net to help citizens get back on their feet. This budget offers real solutions for an efficient, effective government that promises genuine accountability.

I respect that there will be differences of opinion on this issue. But before President Obama and Senate Democrats criticize our plan to balance the budget, they should offer their own. Senate Democrats aren’t offering a budget, while President Obama’s budget raises taxes, spends more and never achieves balance.

A balanced budget will foster a healthy economy and help create jobs. Taking bold action now will provide the economic freedom and security we need to restore America’s future.
