A local congressman met with veterans Thursday to encourage them about their futures and education.
Congressman Scott Perry is a veteran himself, and he spoke to a roomful of veterans continuing their education Thursday at YTI.
A roomful of York Technical Institute students were honored for their service in the military.
There are 60 vets enrolled at YTI, Congressman Scott Perry told them all that being there is the right next step after service.
“Their skills are often specialized, don't translate, but showing up, respectful, a team leader, those are universal skills in any business, great things they bring to the table,” Perry explained.
Some veterans in the room told us further education was not only a good step career wise, but also an outlet.
“I take anxiety pills every day for PTSD,” one veteran explained. “Two friends committed suicide, every day I live in struggle, but I can cope here and talk to guys,”
Many said adjusting to post-service life required discipline.
“It is easy to slump because life is so structured, once back you're in control of yourself,” another vet said.
At YTI, they feel they are on the right track.
“I feel really good about being a Marine and YTI,” stated a student. “The correct stepping stones are up to me but heading in the right direction because of this.”
Each veteran received a certificate and personal thank you from the Congressman Thursday.
After that, YTI leaders talked to them about programs and opportunities at the school.
