Congressman Scott Perry Introduces Balanced Budget Amendment
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Perry re-introduced a Balanced Budget Amendment to the United States Constitution, which mandates that the federal government pass a balanced budget every fiscal year.
“Since I entered Congress, my number one priority has been balancing the budget,” said Rep. Perry. “Washington doesn’t have a revenue problem – it has a spending problem. Our government’s reckless spending is mortgaging off our future and prosperity, and bankrupting critical programs like Social Security and Medicare. The American People mandated that we rein in spending, and I intend to deliver on that.”
The federal government has run up an unsustainable debt of more than $36 trillion - and rising. According to the Congressional Budget Office, we currently borrow 46 cents on every dollar spent by the federal government.
"It's no secret that the Swamp loves any excuse to spend Taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars, and an intervention is long overdue. I applaud my friend and colleague, Rep. Perry, for introducing an amendment to balance the budget, shrink our deficit, and grow America,” said Congressman Andy Ogles. "If Americans are expected to live within their means, then Washington must also. This amendment is a critical step towards that goal, and I'm proud to join Rep. Perry's effort as a cosponsor."
Constitutional Amendments follow a different enactment process than regular bills. To become law, it must pass House and Senate by a two-thirds vote, then three-fourths of all State legislatures must ratify the Amendment.
“We balance our budget in Montana, and Congress needs to do the same,” said Congressman Ryan Zinke. “The American People deserve nothing less.”
