Congressman Perry’s DHS Intel Unification Act Clears House
Washington,
September 14, 2017
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Scott Perry’s proposal to help streamline and improve intelligence sharing at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), H.R. 2468 “The Unify DHS Intelligence Enterprise Act” passed the House of Representatives late yesterday evening.
The proposal will require DHS to develop and professionalize its Intelligence Enterprise (IE). One of the key recommendations of the 9/11 Commission was to unify America’s counterterrorism efforts across government boundaries. The IE gradually evolved from the relevant offices and functions of the 22 previously independent entities that eventually formed DHS. A 2014 report surmised that our government’s ability to measure the success of this effort has been limited. By requiring DHS to produce these reforms, Congress will ensure the Department’s leadership is properly and reliably supported in this effort. Perry is a member of the House Homeland Security Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Management Efficiency. “As subcommittee chair, my responsibilities include making sure the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is held accountable and operating efficiently,” said Perry. “As part of that role, I offer this legislation. Ultimately, the bill helps Congress and the DHS fulfill the promises made to the American people after 9/11, sixteen years ago: “Never Again.” The proposal cleared the House along with a series of security related measures and reforms in the wake of the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The bill now goes to the Senate for further consideration. |
