Statement Regarding the State of the Union Address
Washington,
January 21, 2015
“I hope the President’s State of the Union Address reflects his desire to work with Republicans in Congress to make people’s lives better. Over the past two years, the House passed dozens of solutions that empower people, not Washington, D.C. – but Harry Reid blocked these solutions from ever reaching the President’s desk. With the 114th Congress now underway, the House has passed several of these bills with bipartisan support, only to receive five veto threats from President Obama in two weeks. It’s hard to work together when you’re the only one who seems to want to. I’m open to discussing the ideas outlined by the President tonight, but we must operate in the real world. The President’s request for a $320 billion tax increase largely to fuel more Washington spending is a non-starter. The President already got more than $600 billion in tax increases three years ago, not including the many tax increases under the Affordable Care Act. The key to growing a healthy economy begins by putting more money into the pockets of hard-working American families and growing our economy. Many of the proposals we heard tonight sound great on paper but Americans know that someone has to pay the bill. We’re $18 trillion in debt and can’t keep spending money we don’t have. The old, outdated, top-down approach from the federal government helps to grow Washington’s jobs, but not ones here in the 4th District. The American people demand action, not words. We’ve all seen President Obama give good speeches before and then fail to lead. We need him to outline concrete proposals to address the many foreign policy challenges we face such as ISIS, Iran, Russia, cybersecurity, etc. Congress will move forward on those issues and continue to advance solutions that increase opportunity for all Americans – with more jobs, better wages, and lower health care, energy and education costs. We’ll keep trying to work with the President when we can, attempt to override his vetoes when we must, and take our case directly to the American people each step of the way.” |
