Statement on Pope Francis' Address to Congress
Washington,
September 24, 2015
Welcoming His Holiness Pope Francis to the United States and celebrating the first ever Papal address to Congress was a true, humbling honor. Calling America “the land of the free and the home of the brave”, Pope Francis paid tribute to the American people who “strive each day to do an honest day’s work, to bring home their daily bread, to save money and – one step at a time – to build a better life for their families.” Pope Francis touched on many policy matters including the need to strengthen families, protect “every human life” and confront the challenges of poverty, immigration and the environment. While we may not all agree with Pope Francis’ specific policy stances, we admire his message of humble service to others and share the goal of giving all people an opportunity to pursue their dreams. Instead of focusing on what divides us, Pope Francis today challenged us all to serve one another for the common good. He called America a “land of dreams” and expressed a desire that future generations will be able to live and prosper “in a land which has inspired so many people to dream.” Let us live up to that challenge and to the blessings that God has given to our great Nation. |
